  • Served as UNDP’s senior biodiversity advisor and head of the Biodiversity service line and provided substantive technical policy direction and leadership of the Biodiversity Service Line and other environmental issues by identifying key policy positions for UNDP to take, by organizing international agenda-setting conferences, by preparing Practice Notes, Human Development Viewpoints and other policy statements, managing critical institutional partnerships, and representing UNDP in key global conferences.  Prepared statements and messages for global audiences and policy processes, in order to ensure that UNDP’s senior management, as well as staff throughout the organization, communicate consistent biodiversity-related perspectives and positions based on state-of-the-art knowledge.  Ensured strong coordination and cooperation between UNDP’s work on biodiversity from core resources and that from GEF resources.

    • Poverty-Environment Partnership (PEP) ‘Environment for the MDGs’ Publications and Events for the 2005 World Summit: My keynote address to the PEP meeting in Berlin in November 2004 called for a PEP-wide effort to advocate ‘Environment for the MDGs’ before and during the 2005 World Summit, mobilized member PEP institutions to join in and then managed the work of these agencies to prepare the economic case for the importance of sound environmental management in the MDGs, created high-impact ‘commitments’ among major institutions and organized a High Level Policy Dialogue and Head of State Dinner to announce the analytical results and the commitments.     • Climate Change Futures: Health, Ecological and Economic Dimensions: Co-created and co-managed with Swiss Re and Harvard Medical School this three-year, high visibility initiative to engage major private sector actors in global efforts to address risks of climate change and environmental degradation to society through reports, symposia and major public events.

    • ‘Biodiversity After Johannesburg: The Central Role of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Achieving the MDGs’: Created and managed this joint UNDP-UNEP-CBD post-WSSD partnership to analyze, educate, advocate and disseminate understanding about links between biodiversity and the MDGs through two major conferences in London and various publications.

The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative

A multifaith initiative that brings moral attention and spiritual commitment to protecting the planet’s rainforests by rallying spiritual and religious leaders and faith communities to act to stop deforestation and protect the rights of the indigenous peoples who safeguard them. Launched at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, on 19 June 2017, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist religious leaders joined forces with indigenous peoples from Asia, Africa and Latin America to make the protection of rainforests an ethical priority for the world’s faith communities. Managed by UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Norway’s International Climate & Forest Initiative (NICFI) and Rainforest Foundation Norway (RFN).

The New York Declaration on Forests and Climate

A non-legally binding declaration in support of the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit and the Paris UNFCCC COP where 180 governments, the world’s biggest companies, and influential civil society and indigenous organizations endorsed a global timeline to cut natural forest loss in half by 2020, and end it by 2030, and restore forests and croplands in an area larger than India.

An innovative program to harness the resources of the carbon market to bring long-term sustainable development, at scale, to a wide range of developing countries.


Making REDD Work for the Poor
